Plastic Containers or UV Glass Containers: Which One Should You Choose?
Plastic containers are often seen as handy storing options. They’re lightweight, less expensive, less likely to break, and can be easily transported. However, for specific plant-based food items, plastic packaging isn’t the best choice. Items such as coffee beans, herbs, nuts, and protein powders are prone to react with the plastic packaging, altering taste and structure.
This is where UV glass jars come in to save the stability of these food items.
The Science Behind UV Glass Jars
Natural products that are derived from plants ripen as they’re exposed to light. Just the way plants take up light to grow and mature, so do these products. However, after a certain point the food can begin decaying with light exposure, ruining the product.
UV jars prevent this from happening. They’re designed to specifically block out additional light and allow only the UVA and Infra rays to be absorbed. These light wavelengths are actually beneficial for dry food products as opposed to the ones in visible light, and strengthen durability.
The Need to Stray Away From Plastic
There’s no denying the negative impact plastics have on the environment. In the past decade, there’s been a global callout to limit the use of plastic products due to their non-biodegradable nature. Apart from the environmental risks, using plastic packaging for food also has health risks.
Plastics typically contain a number of additives and chemicals. These can react with the products contained within them, affecting their texture and taste.
Most plastic packaging contains the toxin Bisphenol A (BPA), which has an endocrinal-disrupting effect. While this is often replaced with Bisphenol F (BPF) and Bisphenol S (BPS), these too have been found to be hazardous to the human hormones. Thus, it’s recommended to forego plastic packaging, especially for plant-based food items.
Why Ultraviolet Glass Jars Are a Good Alternative
For storing specific food items, UV glass jars are the best option. These are more than just typical glass jars, as they’re made of special pigmented glass. This helps in decelerating the organic matter from decaying because of overexposure to sunlight, maintaining its freshness.
The glass used in these jars is more durable and better for food preservation than standard glass. This significantly prolongs the shelf life of the goods stored, and makes them last much longer.
